My journey towards becoming a more sustainable traveler

Hey there, I’m Jill.
Passionate globetrotter. Nature lover. A child of the jungle.
Everywhere at home and always craving wanderlust.

I’m a passionate traveler who aims to inspire fellow travelers to follow their wanderlust more sustainably, regardless of their budget, through inspiration, easily applicable tips, and personal experiences. What drives me is that I am convinced that we need to continue traveling to educate ourselves about the beauty of this world which we need to protect.

Growing up in a half Malaysian, half German family, I have always been surrounded by a mix of different cultures. Thus, I have not only developed a deep love for spicy food, the ocean and the Asian continent early on. It also made me open-minded and always curious about new cultures.

About me

In my early twenties, the travel bug has bitten me and never left ever since. I’ve traveled all over south-east Asia on a budget for six months, stayed in Ubud for weeks practicing yoga and worked at a hostel on a tiny island in Thailand. After my Master’s degree I escaped on another long-term adventure through South America for several months.

And I can confidently say that my travels have been a mind-opener, a teacher, an education that I could not have gained in any other way. And after a heavy blow of fate, traveling has given me strength, has been balm for my soul and eventually made me regain vitality.
Obviously, I learned about diverse cultures, about languages but also about human nature and I got to know a different side of myself. I met incredibly inspiring people and made true friends. Besides, traveling has taught me how to face my fears and showed me the magic outside of my comfort zone. The list goes on. Eventually, it left me convinced that traveling is one of the rawest, most honest and most diverse kinds of education. An education that I wish everyone would be able to experience.

Meanwhile, I’ve traveled over 50 countries, some of them as a long-time traveler without a fixed address, some of them while being employed and escaping the office. I have always considered traveling as a gift and there was a time when I tried to take advantage of it as often as possible. Especially when working in an office job, the urge to travel became even greater in any free minute. Needing those breaks from everyday life, I went on short trips to visit, inhale and learn about culture-rich places in short periods. It was all about traveling as much as I could.

I’ve always had some principles that I followed (such as avoiding huge hotel chains, diving deep into the culture, supporting local restaurants and cafes, or choosing buses over flights), which made my way of travel more sustainable. Still, I have not been as aware of the importance of sustainable traveling as I am now. Thus, I was rather oblivious to how large my carbon footprint was.

Diving deeper into a more sustainable lifestyle, I started questioning my excessive traveling. I grew more aware of ways in which I can still see a lot of the world, deeply connect with it but also travel more consciously and sustainably. Through researching and my own adventures over the years, I’ve grown a wealth of experience in ways of sustainable travel. Besides focusing on an environmentally friendly lifestyle, many people are still passionate about traveling. And this is fantastic. I am convinced that we need to continue to travel in order to experience the beauty of this world. Only by experiencing it, we understand the importance of protecting it. Hence, I want to encourage fellow travelers to continue traveling, but to do it the right way.

I am likewise still learning and trying to improve in order to become a more sustainable traveler. This is the journey that I’m continuing and would love you to join me. Let’s be on this journey together. Traveling is a topic I have so much to tell about, and I want to share my experiences with you. Yet there is still so much to learn – and I would love to connect with you & learn from your experiences as well.
